Wednesday, December 11 AFFORDABLE HOUSING IS A TOP PRIORITY FOR BAY AREA RESIDENTS |
|
According to a new poll from the San Francisco Foundation, Bay Area residents overwhelmingly agree that racial and economic diversity is part of what makes their region a great place to live. They're also deeply worried about preserving this diversity, and about the future of their region more broadly. Fortunately, the polling also shows voters recognize that we can do something about this. 79% of residents said that making housing more affordable is a priority issue for them, and 75% consider it a priority to strongly enforce laws preventing landlords, developers, banks, employers and others from discriminating against people on the basis of their race. Bay Area residents know that diversity makes their communities great, and they know that affordable housing and housing protections are essential in order to keep them great. GEARING UP FOR A BIG, BOLD REGIONAL AFFORDABLE HOUSING MEASURE |
|
Fortunately for our Bay Area voters who are ready for a change, we’re excited to share that we have the opportunity in 2020 to bring forward significant, scalable solutions to our region. California lawmakers recently passed AB 1487, a measure that will empower the Bay Area to take a comprehensive, regional approach to our regional housing woes. This bill's transformative power "cannot be understated," NPH Executive Director Amie Fishman told the San Francisco Business Times. But AB 1487 was just the first step to guarantee quality housing for all of our neighbors. We’ll need our elected officials at the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) to commit to putting an ambitious regional affordable housing funding measure on voters' November 2020 ballots. NPH, in partnership with Enterprise Community Partners, is excited to lead Bay Area Housing For All, a diverse coalition of Bay Area organizations, elected officials, and private sector partners, to partner with MTC and ABAG to ensure a strong funding measure is put before voters. We’ll be counting on our members, partners, and allies to help demonstrate that we’re ready for comprehensive, regional solutions for affordable housing, and that we’re counting on ABAG and MTC to bring voters the opportunity to invest in our communities. Coalition Corner: 12/13 Deadline for Pathways to Equity Fellowship applications. The Pathways to Equity Fellowship is an opportunity for professionals to learn best practices for community engagement and equitable design practice. Over the course of five months, fellows will learn from industry leaders and subject matter experts and engage in field work with local community partners. Pathways to Equity welcomes a broad range of perspectives in their cohort, including architects, urban planners, designers, community development experts, artists, and social workers.
