Thursday, February 20 THE COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT ACT IS UNDER ATTACK |
|
The Trump Administration is proposing rules that would fundamentally gut the Community Reinvestment Act by making its investments less targeted to low and moderate income people. If these proposed changes go through it will significantly undermine California's ability to build more affordable homes. We urge you to download and send a comment letter today (.doc) to stop this harmful rule from being implemented. Comments are due no later than Monday, March 9. In 2018 Governor Brown signed AB 2923, state legislation that affects zoning requirements on existing BART-owned property within a half mile of stations in Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco Counties. As a sponsor of AB 2923, NPH closely tracks BART’s implementation of its Transit Oriented Development (TOD) plan to provide technical assistance and support BART's efforts to stay transparent. UPCOMING BROWN BAG AND RESIDENT SERVICES TRAININGS |

Starting in March, the NPH Brown Bag Workshops and Resident Services Training Workshops are back for 2020!
- Join us on Thursday, March 5 (12pm-4pm) at The California Endowment in Oakland for our first Resident Services Training of the year: "You Count. I Count. We Count Together: Census 101 Training for Affordable Housing Services Staff." This training will provide affordable housing services staff with the resources and outreach tools that can support their residents in understanding, accessing, and completing the Census.
- Join us at our Thursday, March 26 (12pm-2pm) for our Brown Bag Training "Implementing New 3Ps Policy Tools," by NPH Regional Policy Manager Rodney Nickens Jr. and NPH Policy Director Pedro Galvao. This training will explore lessons learned from the 2019 legislative session, discuss and demystify these new affordable housing policy and production tools, and break down how local jurisdictions and developers can apply these new tools to produce and preserve affordable housing and protect tenants.

BAY AREA AFFORDABLE HOUSING MEASURES |
|
NPH is proud to work with partners around the Bay Area to continue building momentum for affordable housing through the ballot box. In San Jose, voters will have the opportunity to say yes to affordable housing on the March primary ballot with Measure E, a proposed new tax which could raise tens of millions of dollars to fund affordable housing projects in San Jose. The money would come from a permanent new property transfer tax on commercial, industrial and residential properties worth at least $2 million. NPH has been working to support SV@Home and our members on this campaign. Learn more and get involved. We're also working to bring forward a 9-county regional affordable housing funding measure to bring our solutions to scale. NPH was proud to work with Assemblymember David Chiu, Enterprise Community Partners, and our members to successfully pass Assembly Bill 1487, which authorizes the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) to bring big, bold investments to voters, giving the region the opportunity to build a new foundation for our future. - Please help spread the word that NPH is accepting intern applications for our Bay Area Housing Internship Program (BAHIP)! The deadline to apply for the 2020/2021 internship year is Friday, March 6th at 5:00pm. BAHIP is a one-year, paid internship program designed to recruit and train students of color at Bay Area colleges and universities to become affordable housing development professionals. NPH works to place BAHIP interns in NPH member organizations where they have the opportunity to see the affordable housing sector firsthand. Verna Lim, MA is thrilled to be on board at NPH. She brings story design, content production, and fluff cutter skills to help NPH’s audiences take affordable housing issues to the next level. She loves inspiring folks to click call-to-action buttons, open up pocketbooks, and sign the dotted line — with compelling story, visuals, and interactive tools. Her biggest pet peeve is when good work gets buried under fluff. She honed her impatience for cognitive overload entrepreneurially in various story-focused businesses. At her latest venture, Field Station Media (a video production company), Verna helped innovative companies and organizations get acquired, raise brick-and-mortar funding, and be seen on national networks. In crafting video for EBALDC and the Unity Council, and creating BACLT’s web design and copy, she discovered a passion for affordable housing. It reconnected her to earlier years capturing grassroots leaders’ stories in the Bay Area’s most marginalized communities, as cofounder/principal of See Change Evaluation. A West Berkeley resident since 1998, she’s been alarmed by the impact of displacement in her own neighborhood. Her goal in the 2020s is to fight despair with actionable hope for changemakers at large — visually, verbally, viscerally. |
