Subject: Prioritize Affordable Housing in the May Revise

Message:

May is Affordable Housing Month, a time for advocates and allies like myself to join forces to be bold, loud, and collectively advocate for the need for affordable housing and racial justice throughout California. This is why I am writing: to urge you to make it a priority to champion housing and homelessness solutions by ensuring they are included, at scale for the needs of Californians, in the final 2022-23 state budget. As our state’s residents continue to recover and emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a tremendous opportunity to address our region’s homelessness and housing crises through smart investments in this year’s budget. The Governor’s proposed housing and homelessness investments are a good first step in the right direction for our communities, but they do not yet match the scale of our need. We need you to prioritize in the May Revise: $500 MILLION FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING, AS PROPOSED IN THE GOVERNOR’S JANUARY BUDGET. There are several significant proposals in the Governor’s January Budget, including $500 million this year to maintain the expansion of the state Low Income Housing Tax Credit, along with additional investment in the Infill Infrastructure Grant Program, Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program, and Portfolio Reinvestment Program. $5 BILLION TO REVITALIZE THE MULTIFAMILY HOUSING PROGRAM. This investment would be over three years for the Multifamily Housing Program (MHP) and the California Housing Accelerator Program to increase production of desperately needed affordable housing. $5 BILLION TO DEEPEN INVESTMENTS TO PREVENT AND END HOMELESSNESS. This investment would be over five years to help prevent and end homelessness. We urge the legislature to ensure that meaningful progress is made to dramatically reduce homelessness and permanently house the over 160,000 unhoused Californians. Includes funding for: Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) New homelessness prevention competitive grant Homekey Supportive Services Fund Right to Counsel in Eviction Defense Short-term staffing capacity $900 MILLION TO DEEPEN INVESTMENTS IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING. This includes investment in: Community Anti-Displacement & Preservation Program (CAPP) to acquire and preserve private housing and make it permanently affordable Affordable Housing Preservation Tax Credit CalHOME Farmworker housing development and maintenance I urge you to do the right thing and put our communities first. Take this opportunity to be remembered as a housing champion for your communities: advocate now to deepen investment in these key housing programs. If you do, you’ll be helping set a precedent that ensures that everyone in our community has access to a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. It can start now with your leadership!
