Housing for Everyone

Despite the minimum wage being as low as $13 in California, renters need to make $36 an hour to afford a two-bedroom house — that’s $23 above the California minimum wage. 

Unfortunately, safe, affordable housing isn’t easily accessible to all Californians — economic downturns and rising rent costs don’t affect everyone the same. For example, In Oakland, 70% of the homeless population is Black, despite only making up 23% of the total population. 

Homes are the foundation for strong, healthy, equitable communities, but we know that our current structures and systems aren’t giving everyone a fair shot, offering equal opportunity, or creating equitable outcomes. We know that homelessness and housing instability disproportionately affects people of color due to a legacy of racist housing policies designed to suppress access and equity.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Together, we can take meaningful action for housing justice.

As government officials work together to assess our region’s housing need, we have a once-in-a-decade opportunity to re-envision what our Bay Area communities could look like.
