Dear NPH Supporter,
As announced at the plenary session at our Building Momentum fall conference, NPH is building on the momentum of its work in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to take a more intentional approach to advancing racial equity in the affordable housing movement. We will be working on both operationalizing equity within NPH as well as supporting our members who share this priority to move forward. The next phase of this engagement will run for six months and we invite you to join us as we focus on three priorities:
Ground NPH staff and board in an aligned vision for how to embed racial equity in policies, practices, and programming of the organization.
Work with a core team to develop a racial equity action plan for the organization and its membership for 2019-20.
Provide training for NPH staff, key allies, and general membership, culminating with a targeted training at the 2019 NPH fall conference.
This work will be informed by our partnership with Race Forward, a national policy strategy organization catalyzes grassroots coalitions, community leaders, and government to dismantle structural racial inequity. They apply strategies and tools to transform our nation's institutions, policies, and practices in order to ensure equitable outcomes for all.
Get Involved! To move forward on priority 2 above, we will be building an expanded DEI Working Group that will build our collective ability to build racial equity frames for our work, conduct more thoughtful racial equity analyses of our policies and procedures, communicate effectively about race, and ultimately develop racial equity action plans for our institutions. Participants in the working group will be expected to participate in all training sessions (3-4 hours per session, one per month over 4-5 months) and additional working group meetings during the project period. There will also be modest amounts of between-session work assignments (yes, homework) that will move our process forward.
The dates for January sessions are:
Thursday, January 10, 2019 - 1 to 2pm (Orientation Conversation)
Tuesday, January 29, 2019 - noon to 4pm (Racial Equity Framing)
Space will be limited, so please let us know of your interest no later than December 21 by filling out and submitting this Google Form.
We will announce the roster of the expanded working group by January 7 to allow participants time to prepare for the process. We will also commit to engage and support everyone who expresses willingness to commit to this work even if they cannot be accommodated in the formal working group. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to email Peggy Lee at email@example.com.
Thank you for your interest in this work and stay tuned.
