NON-PROFIT HOUSING ASSOCIATION OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA | | | | The Voice of Affordable Housing | | | | | | Wednesday, October 16 2019 LEGISLATIVE WRAP-UP: KEY HOUSING BILLS SIGNED INTO LAW! | | The 2019 Legislative Session is over and we have much to celebrate -- most of NPH’s Priority Bills have been signed into law! In a statement, NPH Executive Director Amie Fishman notes how we’re at a crucial and unique moment in our affordable housing movement: “This package of bills represents a new approach to affordable housing and housing justice and marks an evolution in how our communities, coalitions, legislative leaders, and executive administration work together to create solutions for all Californians, no matter their race or income.” Together, these affordable housing wins represent a comprehensive and holistic approach to housing solutions and a major step in the right direction. By embracing the “3Ps” of Production, Preservation, and tenant Protections, this strong package of bills can “address our region and state’s critical needs now, as well as set into motion policies and investments that create healthy, affordable, thriving communities for our future.” While these bills represent a huge win for affordable housing, we still have much work to do to ensure they're implemented, as well as additional, critical legislation we'll be working to pass in 2020. Visit our Action Center for a full update on all our Priority Bills, including some that have been turned into 2-year bills. We’re happy to share that the following key housing bills are now the law of the land: - AB 1486 (Ting): will transform surplus public lands into affordable housing
- AB 1487 (Chiu): will allow the Bay Area to pursue regional housing solutions
- AB 1482 (Chiu): will protect tenants from rent-gouging and unfair evictions
- SB 329 (Mitchell): will help end section 8 housing discrimination
- SB 330 (Skinner): which will help create more affordable homes by ensuring that local governments maintain consistent rules and regulations
- AB 1763 (Chiu): which will reduce obstacles to building affordable housing developments near transit
- "3Ps" Bills: NPH was proud to play a leadership role in the “3Ps” legislative campaign and coalition, which saw 10 of the 3Ps campaign bills signed into law, including AB 1482, AB 1486 and AB 1487!
