BIG TECH TAKES STEPS FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Apple announced this month that it will spend $2.5 billion to help address the affordable housing crisis in California. It's the largest in a series of similar pledges from big tech firms this year, which now total $4.5 billion in California.

Apple's pledge includes $1 billion in loans to help developers and the state build low- to moderate-income housing; another billion in mortgage financing and down-payment assistance to first-time homebuyers—particularly the "missing middle" of teachers, nurses, and other essential workers who have been priced out of the communities they serve; and $500 million for local efforts that include donating land the company already owns.

Facebook and Google have already pledged $1 billion each in both money and land to help create and subsidize affordable housing in California. The two companies estimate that their combined investments will create 40,000 homes for Bay Area families and workers.

These pledges are "bold and critical," NPH Executive Director Amie Fishman told NPR. "It is so important that Apple has stepped up, along with other tech companies … It is unconscionable that so many people are sleeping in the streets every night. It is unconscionable that people are driving hours and hours to and from their jobs."

Still, money is only part of the solution to California's affordable housing crisis. As Fishman pointed out to The Hill, tech companies should "work with the experts and the advocates who have been doing the hard work for decades" on effective legislation and land use policies that allow affordable housing development to thrive. These are the kinds of reforms NPH is fighting for—and winning

VICTORY IN SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition A on November 5. The new bond will invest $600 million towards building and fostering low and middle-income housing, with funds earmarked to support housing for educators and the elderly.

Prop A is a win for housing justice that will help San Francisco keep its commitments to the city's most vulnerable. Big thanks to all the NPH members and supporters who volunteered, contributed, and voted to help secure this victory!

NPH and NPH Action Fund are proud to partner with communities around Northern California to identify and pass important revenue measures to create more affordable homes.
